Hand to God

Hand to God by Robert Askins is a dark comedy that explores themes of faith and repression. The play is set in a small Texas town and follows Jason, a teenage boy who is part of a church puppet ministry. Jason’s life takes a strange turn when his puppet, Tyrone, takes on a life of its own. Tyrone becomes increasingly uncontrollable, speaking and acting in ways that shock and disturb those around him, often pushing Jason toward rebellious and violent behaviour.

The story delves into the complexities of faith, family, and the human need to control or suppress parts of oneself. Through Jason’s increasingly bizarre interactions with Tyrone, Hand to God examines the tension between external expectations (like religious devotion) and the chaotic, often violent impulses that lie beneath the surface. The play is both comedic and unsettling, ultimately asking questions about the nature of good and evil, and whether we can truly control the darker forces within us.
